A new principal will greet Campbellsville Elementary School students, staff and teachers in August.

David Petett, 28, will officially take the helm July 1, according to CES site-based decision making council chairwoman Lisa Wiseman.

"We're very excited about having Mr. Petett. We feel he was an excellent choice. He is a great role model for the staff, students and also in the community," Wiseman said.

Petett, one of nine people who applied for the position before the council narrowed the candidates down to five, met the criteria of a principal profile used by the council.

The profile helped the council choose Petett based on his vision for the future, good oral and written communication skills, strong organizational sense, a knowledge of elementary school structure, understanding of and support for the needs of students, staff and the community and a positive attitude, among other things.

"I'm truly honored and blessed to serve the Campbellsville Independent District in this new capacity, and I'm excited to work with and for the students, staff and parents of Campbellsville Elementary," Petett said Thursday.

Petett replaces Linda Handley, who after five years as principal of CES, has accepted a state job as a highly skilled educator, part of a Kentucky Department of Education program aimed at helping ailing schools. Her last day at CES is June 30.

One of 15 Kentucky educators hired for the program, Handley will work with struggling schools on ways to improve student achievement.

Petett has taught social studies for the past six years at Campbellsville Middle School, and he also served as the high school boys' track coach and football offensive coordinator.

He received a bachelor's degree in secondary social studies education from Campbellsville University in 2002 and a master's in educational administration from Eastern Kentucky University in 2007.

He and his wife, Ashlee, have two children, Rylee, 3, and Rowan, 1.

Wiseman said the council is looking forward to beginning the new year with Petett.
