The Lady Dragons of Green County remained one of two undefeated girls’ teams (along with E-town) in the Fifth Region with a 63-42 triumph at Taylor County on Thursday night.

GCHS (5-0) led 9-2 after seven straight points from freshman point guard Micah Jones and went out to a 20-4 advantage after two baskets from Morgan Deaton, five points from Megan Hartfield and another Jones hoop.

Taylor County (4-2) narrowed a 15-point, second-quarter deficit to two (26-24) on back-to-back three-pointers from juniors Cayla Rucker and MeLeigha Pollock to start the third period. However, the Lady Dragons went on a 24-12 run to coast to the double-digit victory.

Hartfield tallied 15 of her game-high 26 points during that second-half stretch and was aided by Jones’ 19 points and 10 by junior center Kelsea Mitchell.

Pollock led the Lady Cardinals with 12 points while eighth-grader Mercedes Cox totaled 10 and Rucker nine.

The Lady Cardinals played Madison Southern at Madison Central on Saturday and will begin play vs. Bardstown in the Coca-Cola/Campbellsville University Holiday Classic this Saturday (5:30) at Campbellsville High. The girls’ teams are off on Sunday before the tourney ends with games next Monday and Tuesday.

Green County’s next action is the Greenwood Invitational after Christmas.
