CU women best Cumberlands, men conquer Shawnee State

Campbellsville University’s women’s and men’s team gained first-round triumphs on Thursday and Friday with reserves playing key roles in the victories at the Mid-South Conference Tournaments in Frankfort.
The Lady Tigers (23-8) held off the University of the Cumberlands 67-62 on Thursday night as Ellen Sholtes hit 11 of 15 free throws for 17 points and Mary Jehlik added 13 points and nine rebounds. Starters Courtney Clifton collected 12 points and Lindsey Burd 10 rebounds.
The CU men (20-11) avoided a season sweep by Shawnee State and overcame a  15-point, first-half deficit to prevail 78-67 on Friday afternoon.
Reserve Darius Clement hit three key three-pointers in the first half while junior front-courter Jordan Myers  had 22 of his game-high 25 points in the second half.
The Lady Tigers played Georgetown in Saturday’s semi-finals while the Tiger men battled Lindsey Wilson.
The championships were set for yesterday with the NAIA Division 1 National Tournament (March 13-19) pairings scheduled to be announced on Wednesday.
