Thomas breaks two records at state meet

Cardinals second in Class 3A weightlifting.

Taylor County High School senior Chris Thomas won his class for the second year in a row and broke two state records at the State Weightlifting Meet at Central Hardin High School on March 9.

Thomas broke the dead lift record (645 set in 1995 by Trigg County's Shelando Grubbs) with a lift of 650 in the 205-pound class. He also broke the total pounds mark (1,000 previously held by Bardstown's William Redd in 1993) with 1,015 total. Thomas had 365 on the bench press.

Thomas was named Outstanding Lifter of the Day.

Taylor County took nine lifters and finished second in Class 3A behind Spencer County and was sixth overall in points.

Trigg County won with a score of 113, and there were 429 total lifters.

Other Cardinal competitors were:

Dalton Kent, 145-pound class, 16th out of 40 with 540 total pounds.

Clay Wright, 165, 22nd out of 39 with 555 total pounds.

Chase Richerson, 185, second in the bench and eighth out of 42 with 760 total pounds.

Levi Smith, 185, ninth out of 42 with 755 total pounds.

Skyler Edelen, 195, third out of 28 with 795 total pounds.

Cody VanMeter, 220, 18 out of 30 with 735 total pounds.

Kenny Webb, 235, ninth out of 23 with 750 total pounds.

Houston Bragg, heavyweight, 18th out of 34 with 785 total pounds.
