Taylor County Elementary School students are helping "pick up the tab" for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass one soda tab at a time.
Students Jayden McCubbin, Callie McCubbin and Chloe McCubbin, Molly Bush and Jayda Smith began collecting tabs in their Girls in Action mission group at Liberty Baptist Church with the help of their leader, Paula Smith.
Recently, the group volunteered to cook supper for residents at the Ronald McDonald house and turned in more than 50 pounds of tabs.
TCES was given the task to see which class could collect the most tabs in about a month. More than 270 pounds of tabs were collected.
Marchetta Garrison's homeroom collected more than 67 pounds and won a pizza party. Tab collection will begin again for the next school year. TCES will have monthly competitions.
KJ Richerson, a former student at TCES, is currently living at a Ronald McDonald house in Houston, Texas, while receiving cancer treatments.
The Girls in Action group at Liberty Baptist will turn in their tabs this summer at Lexington Ronald McDonald house in Richerson's honor. Any business wanting to donate can contact Brandy McCubbin at 403-2000.
