School tax collection going well

Plans are in the works to change the way superintendents at public schools in Kentucky are evaluated.

Campbellsville Board of Education Chair Pat Hall told members during Monday night's regular meeting that school boards are being told they must change the way superintendents are evaluated.

For Campbellsville Superintendent Mike Deaton's mid-year evaluation, she said, the board must participate in a pilot program to assess his abilities.

Hall said the state Department of Education has said boards must document that their superintendents were evaluated mid-year by analyzing "evidence."

Though she didn't discuss the "evidence" during the meeting, the new requirements state that boards and their superintendents are to incorporate three new parts to the evaluation, including district targets, district efficiency and a recently completed staff survey. The new evaluation states that the new requirements are to be discussed between now and the end of the semester.

Hall said by stating publicly that Deaton is being assessed and by gathering the "evidence" required, board members have fulfilled their mid-year evaluation obligations.

In June, she said, board members will use the Kentucky School Board Association's forms to complete Deaton's evaluation, as they have in past years. She said the new state evaluation won't be completed by then.

When it is complete, however, she said, board members will look at the new forms and decide if they will use them or create their own.

Also at the Meeting:

• In his monthly report, Deaton said recent MAP testing went well. About 400 students were tested, he said, and knew their goals before taking the exam. This, he said, can help them boost their scores.

Deaton said the District is pushing its use of personalized learning. He said staff members are working on a report to show state officials how the District will improve its state test scores.

• Marilyn Martin, the District's tax collector, said about 85 percent of this year's city school tax bills have been paid. About 99 percent were paid last year, she said, with only 130 bills left unpaid, for about $26,000 the District is owed. She said it's unlikely to receive some of that money now, but the bills must be paid whenever property is sold, so there is a possibility that some will be paid.

• CES teacher Doretha Sanders received the month's Dare to Soar award. She has worked at Campbellsville schools for 22 years and her students described her as funny, silly, smart, beautiful and fun.

• The month's academic spotlight focused on the District's media specialists at the elementary, middle and high school media centers. Valeria Davis, Susie Crowder and Sara Cobb said students use their centers for homework, reading, projects, study groups, technology and much more.

• Finance Director Chris Kidwell presented the District's financial report for November. November revenue was $967,226.67 and expenses totaled $1,000,837.03. The closing balance at the end of November was $3,568,478.97.

• The month's personnel report includes two new employees, Shajuana Ditto, high school instructional assistant; Sylvia Marcum, substitute cook/baker; and two resigned/retired employees, Wanda Goodin, preschool instructional assistant; and Danny Newton, bus driver.
