Fifty-four 4-H members presented speeches at the Taylor County 4-H Talk Meet competition on Thursday, Dec. 13 at Taylor County Middle School. Many more participated on a classroom level.
For the competition, 4-H members were grouped in age divisions. A large number of participants came from the 10- and 11-year-old divisions. Both of these age divisions consisted of more than one room of competition. The top two speeches were selected from each room. These individuals advanced to the finals for selection of the overall winner.
Winners and runners-up are as follows:
Nine-year-old division - Reagan Pollock, winner, and Taylor Thompson, runner-up; 10-year-old division - Justice Gregory, winner, and David Hunt, runner-up; 11-year-old division - Shelby Barnett, winner, and Chloe Cox, runner-up; 16-year-old division - Samantha Clark, winner, and Tearah Kessler, runner-up; and 17-year-old division - Ashley Phillips, winner.
Thanks to all the teachers who worked with their students and encouraged them to present a speech. For many, it was the first speech they had ever presented. Thanks to all the parents and family members for supporting their 4-H'ers at the competition. A very special thanks goes to all the judges and room hosts. The competition would not have been possible without you.
4-H Talk Meet participants, you should be proud of yourselves. The judges commented on how well you did. Whatever your placing or ribbon color, be proud because you had the courage to get up in front of your audience and speak. Public speaking skills are skills that you will use for the rest of your lives.
I hope you will participate in the Talk Meet again next year. No matter what place you received, set a goal to work even harder next year.
