The chance to have blue ribbon artwork showcased at The White House and more ways to enter online are all expected to increase the number of competitive entries at the 2008 Kentucky State Fair.
One talented Kentucky artist will be honored as his or her blue ribbon Kentucky State Fair artwork is displayed at The White House. The winning entry in the new decorated Kentucky egg category will be added to The White House's prestigious Easter Egg Collection, which showcases an egg representing each state and the District of Columbia.
In addition to the new category, a commercial wine department has been added, giving the Kentucky State Fair 30 departments and thousands of categories for competitors to showcase nearly every talent imaginable. The new department will provide Kentucky's wineries a place to showcase their products for more than 600,000 Kentucky State Fair visitors to enjoy.
More new competitions premiering at the 104th Kentucky State Fair include a scrapbook page depicting a family, scrapbook page depicting a vacation, scrapbook page depicting a holiday and spotted pig competitions.
Most competitions are open to the public and require a completed entry form that must be submitted to the Kentucky State Fair Entry Department by July 1.
The exceptions to the entry deadline are livestock (July 10) and rabbits (July 18). Certain categories are restricted to Kentucky 4-H and FFA members. Regular entry fees are $8 per department, but livestock entry fees vary by category.
For the open competitions, anyone can compete in thousands of categories for ribbons, trophies and a share of more than $250,000 in total cash awards.
Participants can find rules, entry forms and guidelines for each competitive department in the 2008 Kentucky State Fair Entry Catalog. Free catalogs are available online at www.kystatefair.org. To request a catalog by mail, write to Kentucky State Fair Entry Department, P.O. Box 37130, Louisville, Ky. 40233.
Catalogs can also be requested by e-mailing KFECEntry@ksfb.ky.gov or calling the entry department at (502) 367-5190.
To speed up the entry process, several of the fair's most popular competitions will be available for online entry for the first time this year. In addition to immediate online entry for poultry, pigeons, rabbits, culinary, fine arts and crafts, hobbies, antiques and textiles, that was previously available, competitive entry participants can also enter online at www.kystatefair.org for categories in the following departments, homemade wine, homebrew beer, tropical fish and plant and flowers.
The 104th Kentucky State Fair will be Aug. 14-24 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. For more information and continued updates on everything offered at this year's fair, visit the official Web site at www.kystatefair.org.
