It seemed like a long time since Taylor County High School’s Lady Cardinals had pinned a loss on rival Green County on the hardwood.
However, truth and facts be known, it was only in the first part of the 2010-11 campaign that TCHS had pulled off the trick.
Green County had triumphed in 22 of the previous 28 meetings dating back after the Lady Cardinals’ sweep during the 1998-99 season.
Taylor County also bested the Dragons twice in 2003-04 and owned single victories in 2001-02, 2004-05, 2006-07, 2009-10 and 2010-11.
So, the losing skid was only six, but to everyone, coaches, players and fans it felt much longer.
“This was a big win,” said Hannah Howard, who hit two crucial three-pointers as Green County made a fierce fourth-quarter comeback. “Two years ago they beat us like 60.”
Howard missed almost the entire 2012-13 campaign with a back injury suffered during the previous summer.
Becca Orberson, who elected not to play last year as a junior, also remembered the “blow-out” loss two seasons back.
“This is a good win, especially during my senior year.”
While the streak wasn’t nearly as bad as most backers thought it was, neither was the loss from two years ago.
However, Green County did win by 30 (70-40) less than a month ago (Dec. 19) on the Lady Cardinals home court and owned 57-20 and 75-25 last season and 71-31 and 74-31 in 2011-12.
