Tyler Sharpe birdied the second play-off hole to edge Western Kentucky University golfer Will Beard for his seventh consecutive J.B. Holmes Invitational title on July 1 at Campbellsville Country Club.
Sharpe led former Campbellsville University golfer Josh Matney by two shots and Beard, Trey Shirley and Dillon Mays by three strokes heading to Sunday’s final round.
Beard, the son of former Campbellsville High School athlete and Bowling Green orthopedic surgeon Craig Beard, fired a 65 to tie Sharpe, who had back-to-back 68s, at 138. Both linksters had pars on No. 1, the first play-off hole.
Jonathan Read’s second-day 72 propelled him to the First Flight title with a 149, one shot better than Derek Murphy and two better than Jordan Hogue.
In Second Flight play, Jason Farmer’s first-day 82 held up to down Gary Neat by two shots after both golfers had second-day 80s.
Tyler Sharpe’s first cousin, Eddie, fired a Sunday 78 to finish in fifth place with a 166 in that flight.
Joey Stepp went 76-76 in Third Flight competition to down Jordan Veach, who had a first-day 75 before slipping to 83 on day two.
Donnie Pike was the Fourth Flight victor with a 173 (88-85), three shots better than Stephen Hines, Rich Mayberry and Jamie Yarberry.
