Relay for Life just around the corner

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Our signature fundraising event, Relay For Life, is right around the corner in Taylor County on June 6-7. Relay teams are working hard to reach their personal fundraising goals and are canvassing the community asking for donations and hosting events to raise money for the cause.

With community members organizing Relay For Life teams and coordinating these fundraisers to help raise funds to support the American Cancer Society's mission, we wanted to make sure that the community is aware of how to best make donations to charitable organizations.

Consider donating through a secure Web site: Rather than giving out your credit card information, log on to the charity's Web site and make your donation directly. The Relay For Life of Taylor County's Web site - http://events.cancer.org/rfltaylorky - even allows you to select the team and/or team member to whom you would like to donate.

Make checks payable to the charity: The American Cancer Society accepts checks and asks that they be made out to the organization rather than individual teams. This allows for the donor to receive the full tax benefit for his or her donation.

Be cautious of door-to-door and telephone solicitations: The American Cancer Society does not recommend its Relay For Life teams use these techniques for fundraising. If you are ever in doubt about making a donation, contact the American Cancer Society at (800) ACS-2345 to make arrangements for your donation to be received directly by the area office that serves our community.

Know who you are giving to: Feel free to ask for team member and team names. Relay For Life teams will be happy to tell you what team and Relay you are supporting, and those can be confirmed by calling the regional office.
