Taylor County High School captured the Region 3 Bass Fishing Tournament title on Sunday at Lake Cumberland in tough conditions with winds exceeding 25 miles per hour.
Coach Shane Cox’s 12-person team of Cardinals caught the most combined weight of fish among the 45 teams entered.
Anglers competed in teams of two with a designated boat captain in the tourney which ran from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Competitors had to finish in the top 12 to advance to the state tournament on April 27-28 at Kentucky Lake.
TCHS senior Travis Hunt and freshman Daniel Lawson, accompanied by boat captain Roger Lawson, were the overall winners (with catches and releases totaling 7 pounds, 15 ounces) while seniors Elliott Davis and Jill Hale, with boat captain Jeremiah Davis, placed 12th to qualify for the first KHSAA state tourney.
“I’ll always remember being on the first (regional championship) team and standing up there with that trophy,” Hunt offered.
Cox said Lawson “would have the pressure” of helping Taylor County defend its title since the other state qualifiers will graduate.
Hale, who transferred to TCHS from Pike County Central, is the lone girl in the program.
“She got the team’s respect quickly when she beat the whole field in her first tournament,” laughed Cox of Hale, who had fished at her previous school.
“You have to have self-discipline,” said Davis, who was on the first non-sanctioned team two season ago. “You have to focus on your studies, then fishing and then back to school work.”
Other team members for the Cardinals were Mason Sapp, Blake Penick, Ryan Cox, Nick Sublett, Ryan Gregory, Dayton Williams, Weston Mitchell and Ethan South with Larry Cox, Mark Williams, Wayne Dial and Larry Marcum also working as boat captains.
“We couldn’t do this without the tremendous support we get from the administration, parents and others,” Coach Cox said of his program which consists of 30.
“Our team is competitive because these people fish tournaments all year to qualify to be on this squad.”
The team is sponsored by White Oil Company, Zeko Shoes, Lew’s Rod and Reels, Community Trust Bank, Lechar Properties, Double P Masonry, Crazy Horse Archery & Tackle, Citizens Bank, Kentucky Crude Oil, Inc. Missile Baits, Seaguar Fishing Line, Boils Realty and Limestone Farms.
