First-round district basketball games in Kentucky high school basketball are jubilant for the victor and melancholy for the loser.
That was very evident after Taylor County’s 62-41 triumph over Campbellsville on Tuesday night.
“I thought about it a little,” Cardinal senior guard Spirit Smith said about the possible end of his high school career. “I’ve been a little more confident down the stretch.
“Our chemistry is better. Seems like we’re finally getting it all together.
“But, it’s just the first game. It’s just one out of the way.
“Our goal is to get to the state. That’s been our goal from day one.”
On the other side of the spectrum, Campbellsville’s Bradley Bates saw his high school hoop career end.
“I didn’t think we were gonna lose,” admitted a distraught Bates. “I’m proud of where we came from, after going 1-28 last year. I just wish we could have got this one. We didn’t plan on losing.”
Bates, who played five varsity sports for the Eagles said he “will start baseball as soon as possible — probably tomorrow.”
