Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra once said “it’s déjà vu all over again” and it was for Taylor County as they fell behind early to North Hardin, battled back, but lost a 61-52 decision in the Fifth Region Tournament on Tuesday night in Munfordville.
“When you play a good team like North Hardin, you have to able to take care of the ball and score,” acknowledged Cardinals’ head coach Jeff Kidder.
The 12-time region-champion Trojans tallied the first 14 points before senior Spirit Smith connected on two charity tosses at 3:38. However, after a Caleb Wigginton jumper kicked in, North’s lead grew to 20 (24-4) before Quentin Goodin hit a free-throw jumper just before the first-quarter stop.
In the regular-season game on Jan. 12, the Cardinals were behind 19-2 before fighting back to single digits and losing 70-55 on their home court.
Taylor County, which made it 38-24 at the intermission, used an 18-10 third period to creep within six (48-42) starting the final eight minutes.
But, Scotty Sterusky scored all five of his points on free throws while guards Ruben Gosa and Nick Lewis tacked on five more at the stripe and the Cardinals could get no closer.
“I’m proud of our guys’ efforts,” Kidder continued. “I told them in the dressing room that a lot of teams don’t get to cut down the nets.
“But, despite this loss, we are still 20th District champions and they should be proud of that.”
Tournament director Jerry Taylor summarized what a lot of the Taylor County followers felt.
“You’ve got to give them credit. They battled back and didn’t quit.”
Goodin and Wigginton paced the Cardinals with 23 and 22 points, respectively, while the Trojan guards Gosa (18), Tyronn King (15), a sophomore, and Lewis (11), a reserve, combined for 44.

It must have been something in the 20th District water as tournament runner-up Adair County trailed LaRue County 30-7 at the half in Monday’s first first-round game before out-scoring the Hawks 17-10 and 21-18 in the final two quarters.
John Hardin, who fought off a pesky Bardstown team, plays LaRue County in Friday’s first semi-final while North Hardin meets Bethlehem, who clipped Caverna, in the nightcap.
