“I know why he started it,” Donald Skaggs says of his Smith Ridge Road neighbor Tom Curry’s Christmas lights. “He was trying to beat me.”
“I did, too,” says Curry.

For the past 40-plus years, Curry has been lighting up his corner of Smith Ridge Road with Christmas lights, as well as lit reindeer and Santas.
And while many decorate their property for Christmas, Curry’s neighbors, including Carolyn Baker and Skaggs, say few pushing 80 years old go to the extent that Curry does.
Curry never married and he has no children. He decorates his property for Christmas because he likes doing it.
Besides, at 79 years old, Curry said it’s wise to stay active. And putting up Christmas lights helps him do just that.
Each year Curry adds to his display. This year, he has a few new reindeer to show off. He also wrapped his mailbox in lights. As for outdoing his neighbors, Skaggs didn’t concede, but admits he stopped decorating his front yard.
