Campbellsville had all seven first-quarter first downs and dominated the statistical battle all night, but dropped a 33-21 road decision to Bethlehem on Friday.
“Turnovers and penalties are still our Achilles’ heel,” Eagle coach Dale Estes admitted. “We dominated everywhere but the scoreboard.”
Each time Campbellsville marched the pigskin down the field, holding penalties plus two interceptions and a fumble proved costly.
Unbeaten Bethlehem took full advantage for a 21-0 half-time lead and a 27-0 third-quarter cushion.
Bethlehem scored with 5.1 seconds before intermission and after a 36-yard run and a CHS personal foul in the third quarter.
Campbellsville, which won the first-down battle 20-6, tallied three scores in the final frame as freshman quarterback Arick Groves tallied the final two TDs on 14-yard runs after Eric Lamer scored from 10 yards out.
Soccer player, Dalton Hughes, booted all three Campbellsville extra points.
“I’ll need to look at the film and see if the calls were right,” Estes continued. “I thought we played harder and better.
“If we can eliminate penalties and turnovers and the big plays on defense, we will get better.”
Bethlehem, which has 11 seniors to Campbellsville’s four, rode the leadership of quarterback Conner Ballard who scored on an 86-yard run and also had TD passes totaling 5, 47 and 4 yards, respectively.
Campbellsville (0-5) hosts Class 2-A power Danville, a 48-34 victor over Green County, on Friday before beginning district play on Oct. 11 at home against Williamsburg.
