Pasture and Hayland signups start next month

The Kentucky Soil and Water Conservation Commission will resume State Cost Share sign-ups for the period of Jan. 1 to Jan. 25.

The January cost share applications should be submitted to the Conservation District by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25.

This year, the Pasture and Hayland Renovation practice allows producers interested in renovating existing pasture and hayland an option to specifically assist them in doing so.

Any permanently established pasture or hayland with less than 10 percent legume composition is eligible. A soil test that is no more than three years old is required. Lime and fertilizer must be applied, according to test results. The producer can seed grass along with legume but cost-share is not available for that practice.

Approval is expected by Feb. 15 so producers will be able to take advantage of spring planting season.

For more information, stop by Conservation District office at 1105 S. Columbia Ave. or call 465-8554 Ext. 3. The office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Deadline approaches to change parties

Voters have one week to change their party affiliation before the May Primary.

Kentucky state law requires any voter who wishes to change voter registration and also vote in that partys upcoming primary election be registered with a new party by Dec. 31 of the preceding year. The deadline also affects candidates who wish to switch political party affiliation and run in their new partys primary election.

Locally, those who wish to change their party affiliation in person must do so at the Taylor County Clerks office by 4:30 Friday. The office will be closed on Dec. 29, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Registration cards that are mailed must be postmarked by Dec. 31.

Voter Registration cards are available at county clerks offices or on the Vote! Kentucky Web site, located at www.vote.ky.gov/register.

While voters who change their party registration after Dec. 31, will not be able to vote in their new partys primary election, they will be able to vote in special elections and non-partisan races.

Races that will appear on the 2008 ballot include, but are not limited to:

- U.S. president.

- U.S. senator.

- U.S. representatives.

- State senators in odd-numbered districts.

- State representatives.

- KY Supreme Court justice in District 4 and District 5.
