After starting the season with nine consecutive setbacks, the Campbellsville High School Lady Eagles rolled over Whitefield Academy 59-25 on Saturday afternoon in the Paul J. Coop Gymnasium.
“It was great to see everyone relax and just play like they have in practice,” head coach Richard Dooley said.
The Lady Eagles raced out to leads of 6-0, 10-4, 16-4 and 16-7 as eighth-grader Nena Barnett, the normal point-guard starter who came off the bench, tallied eight first-quarter points.
The second quarter belonged to freshman Caroline McMahan, who tallied all 10 of her points, beginning the frame with a three-pointer from the right baseline.
After leading 36-14 at the intermission, CHS used a 22-6 third period to start the continuous running clock with eight-grader Vonnea Smith scoring 11 points, tying her with Barnett for game-high scoring honors with 16 points.
“Hopefully this is something that we can build on,” Dooley said. “We have played well in spurts, but this was the first time all year we played well the whole game.”
Freshman Brenna Wethington led the Lady Eagles with seven rebounds and four assists. Smith also collected six caroms and Kiyah Barnett dished out three assists.
After having a home game cancelled with Burgin on Monday, the Lady Eagles host Taylor County in the first half of a girl/boy doubleheader on Friday starting at 6:00.
