Taylor County tallied a run in the first, three more in the third and two in the fifth en route to blanking Campbellsville 6-0 on the Durham Campus in the 20th District Softball Tournament on Monday.
“We executed well with our small game and laid some good bunts down which opened the game up for us,” admitted second-year Lady Cardinals’  coach Neil Sanders. “We played solid defensively and communicated well as a team on defense.
“Hannah (Howard) threw well and located nicely and did a good job getting ahead in the count.”
TCHS scored the lone run it would need in its first at-bat on a single and stolen base by Cheyenne Moran and run-scoring hit from Shelby Carney.
Seniors also played a huge role in the second Lady Card run.
In the third, Carney singled before she was driven home by Karissa Mings.
Haley Wright singled before Howard’s sacrifice bunt scored Mings for a 3-0 cushion. The fourth run came on a wild pitch.
Lady Eagle pitcher Paige Dabney battled out of several jams to keep the game close before two-run fifth.
Howard and MaKayla Sabo singled  with Reagan Pollock’s infield out scoring the fifth run and a passed ball brought in the sixth.
The lone three CHS hits came on singles by Keena Angel in the second, Masi Wilson and fourth and Dabney in the sixth.
Taylor County got hits from all nine batters in its order with Carney and Wright getting two apiece.
Howard pitched the first six innings with Kim Davis hurling the seventh.
“I told my team following the game ‘we just beat a good team’ and hopefully we can find a way to steal another one Wednesday,” Sanders concluded.
The 16 wins by Weston Jones’ Lady Eagles were the most by a CHS softball team since the 2001 squad (21-12) won the district and lost in the second round of the Fifth Region Tourney to Meade County.
Taylor County played Adair County (15-11), a 6-3 winner over Marion County for the district title yesterday with both squads heading to Monday’s Fifth Region Tournament at Hart County.
