Taylor County High School’s 13-point lead had shrunk to only two (44-42) with 3:40 left in the contest at Green County on Tuesday night.
However, Lady Cardinal junior Hannah Howard forward hit back-to-back three-pointers in a 30-second stretch and coach Whitney Hooper’s club held on for a 56-51 victory.
“I knew my team was behind me,” said Howard, who hit four first-half treys, but had misfired in the third frame and the first half of the final period. “I have confidence in my shot.”
Howard’s early threes and a 23-point night from Rachel Shoemaker enabled the Lady Cardinals to keep an advantage for the last two and a half frames.
“Without a doubt this is my biggest win,” Hooper, the second-year coach, admitted about her 11th overall triumph.
“We wanted to work the clock, but still attack. We were smarter tonight than we have been all year.”
Bale’s 10-point fourth period had brought coach Chris Blaydes’ club back from the double-figure deficit. Fellow senior Brianna Scott had 14 points for the Lady Dragons.
“We came out not ready to play and got in a dog fight,” Blaydes said.
Shoemaker had a balanced game for the Lady Cardinals with five points each in the first and second frames, seven in the third quarter and six in the final eight minutes, including 4-5 from the charity stripe to ice the road victory.
