The defending 20th District-champion Taylor County High School Lady Cardinals began their 2014 softball slate by shutting out Casey County in six innings on Steve Clark Field on Saturday afternoon.
Junior right-hander Hannah Howard was the starter and hurled the first five innings, giving up no runs on three hits while striking out six.
Senior Karissa Mings pitched the sixth inning frame and gave up only one hit. Mings also led the TCHS offense with three hits (two singles and a double) while Shelby Carney and MaKayla Sabo had two hits (a single and a double each).
Howard, Haley Wright, Olivia Burton, Cheyenne Moran and Becca Orberson had one single apiece.
Coach Neil Sanders club went with an opening-day line-up of Orberson, LF; Megan Roberts, CF; Reagan Pollock, RF; Mings, 3B; Moran, SS; Wright, 2B; Carney, 1B; Burton, C; Howard, P; and Sabo, DP.
The Lady Cardinals bested Hart County 6-2 at home on Tuesday as Karissa Mings pitched the first innings, allowing one hit while fanning four, and Hannah Howard hurled the sixth and seventh frames and allowed an earned run.
Seniors Becca Orberson (two singles) and Shelby Carney (double, triple) had two hits apiece for Taylor County while Cheyenne Moran and Haley Wright doubled and Mings and Madison Burress had singles.
