Taylor County’s rallies in the fifth and seventh innings still left the Lady Cardinals short and with a 6-5 opening-game loss to Green County in the Fifth Region Tournament on Monday at Nelson County High School.
The Lady Cardinals led 1-0 in the third when Shelby Carney’s infield fly was lost in the sun by Lady Dragon shortstop Rachel Marr.
However, Green County used a five-run, five-hit top of the fifth frame to grab a 5-1 cushion.
Taylor County cut it to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth on singles by Shelby Johnson and Carney around a walk to Becca Orberson and Haley Franklin reaching on an error.
The Lady Dragons added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to lead 6-3 before the Lady Cardinals’ late rally came up just short.
Franklin led off with a single and went to third on Carney’s double.
Karissa Mings singled to make it 6-4, but was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
After a fly-out, Hannah Howard singled in the fifth run and Marr caught the last out as Reagan Pollock tried to get one over the head of the all-region performer.
Green County dropped a 2-1 semi-final decision to North Hardin on Tuesday.
