Taylor County Elementary School Junior Beta club members recently won Songfest at National Junior Beta convention in Mobile, Ala., on June 14-18.

Taylor County's Junior Beta begins in fifth grade and ends in ninth grade when students transition to Beta.

Beta's Songfest competition requires students to choose a familiar tune or song, keep the melody and change the lyrics to fit the theme of Beta for that year.

This year's winners chose "If I Only Had a Heart" from the Wizard of Oz and changed the lyrics to "Just Use Your Beta Heart."

The group consists of 75 members, 30 who competed at Nationals and performed in front of a panel and attendees at the Beta Convention.

The group was judged on originality and how well they fit the Beta theme.

The students won the state competition earlier this year, which qualified them to represent Kentucky at the National Junior Beta Convention.

Teachers Debbie Gumm and Susie Pollock are junior beta sponsors.
