A Campbellsville man currently incarcerated at the Taylor County Detention Center has been charged with assaulting a jail staff member while in custody.

John Kessinger, 55, of 1356 Saloma Road, was charged last Monday at 12:30 p.m.

According to Kessinger's arrest warrant, he allegedly injured Sgt. William Milby when charging out of his jail cell on April 14.

Kessinger is being incarcerated on a theft charge.

Court records state that Kessinger was taken to the ground but continued to be combative. Kessinger allegedly grabbed Milby's radio and struck him in the head with it, which caused a cut.

Kessinger was charged with third-degree inmate assault of a corrections officer. The charge is a Class D felony, punishable by as much as five years in prison.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge in Taylor District Court last Wednesday.

Bond was set at $5,000 cash and he was appointed a public defender.

Kessinger is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday.
