Bulldogs eliminate Eagles in second round of play-offs.

By Bobby Brockman

Hazard struck early with three first-quarter touchdowns and eliminated Campbellsville 55-21 in the second round of the Class A play-offs on Friday night.
“We needed some breaks and they didn’t give us any,” Eagles’ head coach Jay Cobb admitted. “We were faced with too many mismatches tonight.”
The Bulldogs (9-2) need only a two-yard run and an Eagle off-sides penalty before freshman Brandon Jones broke loose for a 59-yard score.
After CHS lost eight yards on its first three plays on offense, the home squad moved 51 yards on eight plays to score on junior quarterback Evan Whitaker’s one-yard sneak.
The Eagles did get a first down on their next possession, but fumbled and Hazard ran it back to the CHS five-yard line and scored their third touchdown three plays later on a three-yard run by senior Zack Blanton for a 20-0 cushion.
Tashaun Hoskins’ 49-yard run set up Campbellsville’s first score when Hoskins grabbed a two-yard pass out of the backfield from fellow senior Josh Hicks. Bradley Bates’ point-after kick made it 20-7 at the 10:48 mark before the half.
However, the Bulldogs, with only non-district losses to Breathitt County and Somerset, tallied two more touchdowns (29 yard reception and 59-yard punt return by junior Austin Johnson) to lead 34-7 at the intermission.
Despite the half-time break, Hazard scored three more touchdowns at the 10:08 (on an interception return by Blanton), 6:56 (13-yard pass play to junior Jordan Olinger) and 2:08 (Blanton’s 65-yard run) to increase its lead to 55-7.
Campbellsville added a pair of tallies when Alex Brunelle ran a kick-off back 49 yards to set up Hoskins’ 27-yard score with Brunelle getting the key block around right end late in the third quarter.
Brunelle finished out the scoring when he caught a 20-yard pass from back-up quarterback Zach Durham with 4:15 remaining in the contest.
Hoskins finished with over 100 yards rushing.
Hazard advances to the region finals when the Bulldogs visit Williamsburg on Friday. The winner of that game will host a semi-state clash vs. the Pikeville at Fairview survivor on Nov. 25.
Campbellsville finishes Cobb’s second season at the Eagle helm with a 7-5 worksheet.

* Hazard, who could well advance to this year’s Class A finals, loss in state championship tilts to Beechwood (14-7) in 2008 and Mayfield (47-6) last season.
n When Campbellsville lost the regional final (44-6) at Hazard in 2007, the Bulldogs lost the next week at Lexington Christian (45-21). LCA lost in the finals that season to Beechwood (38-35).
* The Bulldogs, who have field turf similar to Campbellsville University and Lindsey Wilson College, also were eliminated by LCA (35-28) in 2009. LCA defeated Mayfield for the  state title that season.
