Jeffrey Gumm shot a two-day total of 141 and won a four-way playoff to become the medalist at the Rome News-Tribune Invitational Golf Tournament in Rome, Ga. on March 10-11.
Gumm shot a 72 the first day and bested that by three strokes on Tuesday with a 69 and was tied with Jeff Ivall of Northwood, Samuel del Val of Berry and Patrick Scheil of John A. Logan Community College before winning the playoff.
Gumm and del Val made it a two-man affair after the first extra hole when both had birdies at the par 4 No. 1, del Val sinking a long 35-foot putt to remain alive, then both had pars at the par 4 No. 2.
At No. 3, however, Gumm's putter prevailed when the senior sank a 15-footer to save par, then saw del Val miss his par putt from 10 feet out.
"I putted the ball great in this tournament," Gumm told the local newspaper.
The Tigers, tied for second with Northwood after the first round with a 291, shot 301 the second day for a total of 592 to wind up in a fourth-place tie with Shorter College.
Twenty teams participated in the two-day event.
Lindenwood won the tournament with a score of 580, followed by Berry College with 583 and Northwood with 585.
Campbellsville's Scott Webb finished in a tie for 18th with a two-day total of 148, Brandon Young tied for 27th with a 150, Jeff Sullivan tied for 45th with a score of 154 and Josh Foster tied for 67th with a 158.
