Teachers across Kentucky can improve their skills in teaching civic education at a free training program July 22-25 in Frankfort. The Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts and the national Center for Civic Education will sponsor a free summer institute for teachers about the "We the People ... the Citizen and the Constitution" program and civic education. Interested educators must register by June 23.

We the People is a nationally acclaimed civic education program created by the Center for Civic Education in California to promote the history and philosophy of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. In Kentucky, the AOC and the Center for Civic Education co-sponsor the program.

The free training is open to all Kentucky K-12 teachers who want to teach the "We the People ... the Citizen and the Constitution" program for at least one semester during the 2008-2009 school year. Teachers who agree to provide the We the People program for their students will receive free book sets and other materials associated with the course.

"We encourage educators to take advantage of this nationally renowned civic education program that will enable them to impart deep knowledge of the U.S. Constitution to their students," said Deborah Williamson, executive officer of the AOC's Department of Court Services and state coordinator for the Center for Civic Education programs.

In addition to learning about the U.S. Constitution and the We the People program, participants will attend sessions about interactive teaching methods designed to enhance students' understanding of the Constitution and other effective strategies for classroom teaching. They will also gain access to professional development opportunities and civic education programs throughout Kentucky.

Lodging will be free for participants who must travel more than 30 miles to attend the training in Frankfort. Meals will be provided at no cost to all participants.

To obtain a registration form, visit the AOC's Web site home page at www.courts.ky.gov and scroll down to locate the form under News of Interest. You may also contact Earl Kuhnell, Althea Hicks or Deborah Williamson at (800) 928 2350.

We the People is one of the many youth-related programs offered through the AOC in Frankfort. The AOC is the operational arm of the Kentucky Court of Justice and supports the activities of 4,000 court system employees, including the elected offices of justices, judges and circuit court clerks. The AOC also executes the Judicial Branch budget.
