February has a lot to offer

-A A +A

A column by Taylor County Judge/Executive Eddie Rogers

On Groundhog’s Day, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, so we should anticipate an early spring.

We also will be celebrating Valentine’s Day and President’s Day. We should not forget our loved ones on Valentine’s Day and we should honor our past presidents and ask Congress to work together and with President Obama during his second term, not only for the United States, but for us here locally.

I would have to commend all of the county entities with their work on getting our roads drivable on Jan. 25.

The Taylor County Road Department did an excellent job in clearing our county roads and anticipated the refreezing of the roads on Saturday morning, working with state and city officials.

The Taylor County Animal Shelter expansion is complete and we had a grand opening on Jan. 14. A donation was given by Margaret Nelson, and her family was in attendance. We also named a resident cat after Mrs. Nelson.

The Taylor County Airport has received grants to do improvements. They have worked on some ditch drainage and have put in some new lights, which are near completion. They will be working on some improvements with re-paving of the runways, taxi area and pad.

Our industrial development area has had some activity. The INFAC group have broken ground and started construction with the framework going up, soon they will be ready to relocate to this site.

This is good for Taylor County business expansion.

Our recycling center is doing well. We have gotten more businesses coming on board and calling us to recycle their cardboard and other recyclables. I encourage all of Taylor County to do their part and recycle. This will improve our county and, of course, our environment. When you are using the recycling facilities, please rinse out all containers and metal cans.

Our county budget is in really good shape. We were able to blacktop a few more roads this fiscal year.

If you as a resident have any road concerns, please contact your magistrate or myself so we are aware of any road problems.

We will soon be working on our next fiscal year budget, so we need to hear from you on possible improvements of our roads and of course any other concerns.

I invite you to attend Taylor County Fiscal Court monthly meetings for discussion of county business.

As Taylor County Judge/Executive, I encourage residents to get involved in their community and ask questions of their elected officials.

We welcome your comments and I have always said that my door is always open.

Taylor County Courthouse offices will be closed on Feb. 18 in observance of President’s Day.
