An Elk Horn woman has been arrested and charged with abusing a child.

Nikkie Roseanna Russell, 21, of Bass Ridge Road, was arrested on Wednesday, July 23, and charged with second-degree criminal abuse of a child age 12 or younger.

According to Russell's arrest warrant, she allegedly caused a large contusion on the child's right cheek and contusions and scratches on the child's left cheek, while the child was in her care on May 23.

Russell pleaded not guilty to the charge, which is a Class D felony punishable by as much as five years in prison, on Friday, July 25. Bond was set at 10 percent of $5,000 and she was ordered to not have contact with the child. Russell was appointed a public defender.

Last Wednesday, the charge against Russell was held to the Taylor County grand jury for possible indictment.

Taylor County Sheriff's Deputy Dickie Benningfield investigated.

Court records also list her address as Adam Street in Danville.
