Campbellsville scored on two conventional plays and also added two defensive touchdowns, a punt return for a score and a field goal to end a six-game losing streak (five this season and the final game in 2011) to down visiting Paris 37-30 on Friday night at Dave Fryrear Field.
A halfback pass from Dra Thornton to Cameron Hughes for 37 yards set up a Zach Durham lateral pass to Austin Hash in the right flat, who then passed to Kendon Young for a 21-yard touchdown.
Bradley Bates’ first of four extra points gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 9:24 still left in the opening quarter.
Three minutes later, Deston Ford and Josh Roe sacked Paris quarterback Nathaniel Stevens in the end zone and Hash recovered for the score.
After the Greyhounds scored to make it 14-8, Roe recovered another fumble in the end zone after a team sack and Young returned a punt 83 yards to pay dirt.
However, the 28-8 cushion did not feel as comfortable for Dale Estes’ team when Paris made it 28-22 early in the third frame.
But, a Durham nine-yard TD run around right end in the third period and a Bates’ 30-yard field goal with 1:56 left in the fourth enabled Campbellsville to post its first win since a 28-12 play-off triumph at Campbellsville University over Pineville on Nov. 4.
The Eagles (1-5) have this week off before starting district play on Oct. 5 at favorite Williamsburg (5-1).
