Cumberland County made it two in a row after a nine-game losing start with a 69-49 triumph over home-standing Campbellsville High School on Saturday night.
The Panthers, who defeated Prestonsburg in their last game of the 2013 calendar year in the Lake Cumberland Holiday Classic at Southwestern, jumped out to a 12-7 lead before three straight baskets by eighth-grader Tyrion Taylor gave the Eagles (1-11) their last lead at 13-12.
Cumberland County hit eight of 13 first-quarter shots and were 15-26 at the half. And, after going “only” 5-11 in the third, the Panthers were 7-11 in the fourth to finish 27-48 (56.2 percent)
Austin Hash’s three-point play brought coach Tim Davis’ team within 17-16 before the Panthers reeled off the next eight and led 37-27 and 50-36 at the end of two and three quarters.
Damontez Smith led the Eagles with 10 points while Hash totaled eight and reserves Zach Durham and J.T. Holmes plus Taylor with six apiece.
Campbellsville played LaRue County in a make-up game last night and will host Taylor County in a girl/boy doubleheader on Friday (6:00/7:30).
The Eagles’ next three games will be on the road at Hart County (Jan. 14), Marion County (Jan. 17) and Caverna (Jan. 20), which will be an opening-round game in the Touchstone Energy Fifth Region All “A” Classic..
