The Campbellsville University baseball Tigers defeated William Penn University 5-2 in the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

Coach Beauford Sanders' club, seeded No. 1 in the Lindenwood region, tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning and allowed only four hits.

With one out, Nathan Quesenberry tripled and scored on Chris Curley's double.

Brian Chase hit the next pitch for a three-run homer and a 3-0 Campbellsville cushion.

William Penn, located in Oskaloosa, Iowa, tallied a run in the second before the Tigers plated two in the seventh.

Nick Bertolucci started with a bunt single and, with one out, Quesenberry singled and both scored on Curley's two-run double.

The Statesmen, who won the play-in game 2-1 over Dakota Wesleyan, scored the game's final run in the eighth.

The other Tiger hit came on Zach Townsend's fourth-inning single.

Marc Wilson got the mound win to propel CU to yesterday's winners' bracket final against Kansas Wesleyan, a 3-1 victor over host Lindenwood.

Wilson went 7 1/3 innings and struck out six before giving way to Bryan Fuller, who recorded the final five outs with two strikeouts and allowed only one base runner.

Yesterday's winner will play today at 6 p.m. and will have to lose twice (today and tomorrow at 2) to not advance to the NAIA Baseball World Series.

Yesterday's loser will play today at 2 and have to win three straight games to make it to Lewiston, Idaho.
