A Campbellsville couple has pleaded not guilty to raping and sodomizing a young girl.
The woman was arrested last Wednesday and, after police asked for the public's help Thursday afternoon to find the man, he turned himself in to police later that evening.
Joyce Sherrill, 48, of 408 Walling St., was arrested at 4:42 a.m. Wednesday, and David Lee Taylor, 50, of 308 Clem Haskins Blvd., formerly of 524 Washington St. in Elizabethtown, was arrested at about 5 p.m. Thursday.
A Campbellsville Police news release states that an investigation began after the office received a complaint of a possible rape involving a 15-year-old girl.
After an interview with police, Sherrill was arrested and officers wanted to question Taylor.
According to Taylor's arrest citation, she allegedly failed to report that her boyfriend, who was living with her, had committed a sexual act with the girl two to three weeks earlier.
Court records state that after being read her Miranda rights, Sherrill told police during an interview that she called the girl and invited her to the Walling Street home knowing her boyfriend would commit further sexual acts with the girl.
When the girl arrived, records state, Sherrill was allegedly involved in sexual acts with her boyfriend as he allegedly sodomized and raped the girl.
Sherrill was charged with failure to report the neglect or abuse of a child, complicity to first-degree sodomy, complicity to first-degree rape and complicity to first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor in an illegal sex act with physical injury.
The complicity to sodomy and rape charges are both Class B felonies, punishable by as much as 20 years in prison each. The unlawful transaction with a minor charge is a Class A felony, punishable by as much as life in prison. The failure to report child abuse charge is a misdemeanor offense.
Sherrill pleaded not guilty to the charges in Taylor District Court last Wednesday. Bond was set at $20,000 cash and she was ordered to not have contact with her alleged victim, commit any crimes or have contact with any minors. Sherrill was appointed a public defender.
She is scheduled to appear in court again Wednesday.
Court records state that Taylor was charged with first-degree sodomy, first-degree rape and first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor in an illegal sex act with physical injury.
According to his arrest warrant, Taylor allegedly forced the 15-year-old girl to have sex with him on various occasions between July 8 and July 26.
Taylor appeared in court on Friday for arraignment. He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and bond was set at $100,000 cash.
He was appointed a public defender and ordered to not have contact with his alleged victim or any minors. Taylor is also scheduled to appear in court again Wednesday.
The rape and sodomy charges are Class B felonies, punishable by as much as 20 years in prison each. The unlawful transaction with a minor charge is a Class A felony, punishable by as much as life in prison.
According to the news release, Taylor is a registered sex offender.
The Kentucky Online Sex Offender Registry states that Taylor, who is also known as Birdie Taylor, is a lifetime registrant who is compliant with the terms of his registration.
The site states that Taylor is a move-in offender from New York who was convicted of sexual abuse and two counts of first-degree sodomy of a 10-year-old.
Campbellsville Police Officer Richie French is investigating the case against Sherrill and Taylor. He couldn't be reached before press time to comment for this story.
