Taylor County raced out to a 14-2 lead, but had to hold on to edge Adair County 53-51 on Wednesday night in the Boys’ 20th District Tournament.
Senior Trae Wells, sophomore Caleb Wigginton and eighth-grader Quentin Goodin had 13 points apiece to pace coach Troy Young’s team.
Seventh-grader Kel Stotts led the Indians with 18 points while senior Kyle Young added 16.
It looked as if the Cardinals would waltz to the district finals as they built a 14-2 lead and led 16-9 at the first-quarter stop as all five TCHS starters scored.
However, the Indians (19-12) fought back to within one (25-24) at half-time before Taylor County again built a nine-point cushion (44-35) as junior reserve Dylan Quinn nailed a left-wing three-pointer, Wells had a steal, dunk and two free throws and Goodin a lay-up during a 9-3 run to end the third period.
Adair County cut it to three (48-45) on Young’s three-point play with less than two minutes to play. However, Cardinal senior center Lucas Bradshaw answered on the other end with a three-point play of his own to put Taylor County back up by six (51-45) with 59.5 seconds remaining.
Two Stotts free throws and a Justin Reeder hoop made it 51-49 with 32.3 left.
Goodin and Wigginton hit single free throws at 24.0 and 12.6 around a Young lay-up and Matt Fudge’s right-wing three-pointer came up just short before the final horn.
The victory assured the Cardinals (16-12) of its 11th Fifth Region Tournament appearance during coach Troy Young’s 12-year run as TCHS head coach.
Taylor County played Marion County for the district title on Saturday night.
Only two other teams have accomplished the 11 region trips in 12 seasons. The Taylor County boys’ teams of coach Fred Waddle went to 11 straight Fifth Region Tournaments from 1974-84 (eight district titles and four region crowns) and the Marion County Lady Knights of coach Bev “Sis” Roby and Freddie Leathers only missed one regional trip from 1986-97 (10 district championships and a region crown and two seconds).
