Defending 20th District champion Taylor County began its boys’ basketball season with a 70-55 home-court triumph over Washington County on Tuesday.
Coach Troy Young’s Cardinals trailed for the first 10 minutes of the contest before Caleb Wigginton’s three-point play, on an assist from Quentin Goodin, put TCHS up for good at 26-23.
The sophomore Wigginton had 19 of his game-high 25 points in the first half as Taylor County led 30-26 at the intermission.
Goodin, an eighth-grader, and senior Trae Wells helped the Cardinals increase their lead to 15 (53-38) at the third-quarter stop.
Goodin scored three hoops, including a steal and a break-away dunk, around a Wells hoop before Wells added three more baskets around a Wigginton lay-up.
Wells finished with a 17-point game while Goodin totaled 12 and junior reserve Austin VanMeter contributed 10.
Wells and Goodin nearly had double-doubles as Wells had nine rebounds and six assists and Goodin had nine dish-outs.
Taylor County hosts Elizabethtown, a 54-50 loser at home to Adair County on Tuesday, on Friday in a junior varsity-varsity twinbill.
Next week, the Cardinals play district games at home vs. Campbellsville on Tuesday and at Adair County next Friday.
