Taylor County upends Marion County 93-86 in Lebanon

By Bobby Brockman

Taylor County had a fierce battle to keep its district record perfect and earn the No. 1 seed in the post-season tournament in two weeks with a 93-86 road triumph at Marion County on Friday.
Quentin Goodin, who hit 18 of 24 free tosses, led Taylor County with 31 points while fellow perimeter players Ezra Oliver and David Sloan had 20 points apiece. Oliver’s hit some early three-pointers and a pair of late bombs.
However, the Cardinals’ head man was not pleased with the play on the other end.
“We did not guard at all,” TCHS coach Richard Gatewood said. “We’re losing focus and we were lazy.”
A pair of senior paced the Knights as Alex Smith scored 36, with seven treys, and Latrelle Irvin had 17 points.
After the Cardinals led 49-44 at half, Marion County won the third period 26-19 in The Roby Dome to lead 70-68 heading to the final eight minutes.
“But, hustle down the stretch and getting to 50-50 balls by Caleb Wigginton and Austin Webster plus hitting free throws won us this game,” Gatewood said.
Wigginton attempted only three hosts from the field, but hit a two and a three plus all four of his free throws for nine points.
Goodin just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and also had a four steals while Sloan had a team-high five assists.
The Cardinals finish district play at 6-0 and will host cross-town rival Campbellsville in the first night of the Boys’ 20th District Tournament at Marion County on Wednesday, Feb. 26. (Marion County and Adair County will meet in the second first-round gamer on Thursday, Feb. 27.) The Girls’ 20th District Tournament begins on Tuesday, Feb. 25 with the top seed playing Campbellsville and the No. 2 seed battling Taylor County in doubleheader action.
TCHS (18-5) entertained Cumberland County over the weekend and visits  Washington County on Tuesday and LaRue County on Friday for girl/boy doubleheaders around a boys’ make-up encounter at North Hardin on Wednesday.
