Kelsi Brown is a far cry from her childhood days of dressing herself in a hula skirt and cowboy boots for church. She has not lost her unique style; instead it has taken her one step closer towards her goal of becoming a fashion designer.

Brown, a Taylor County High School senior, is the winner of The Art Institute of Indianapolis' Passion for Fashion competition and a $3,000 scholarship. Her design stood out among 14 entries across the state of Indiana and advanced to the national competition in New York City. The competition required the creation of an original evening wear design. Brown's entry was a dress that reflected her own style that could be dressed up or down.

"I wanted to create something that would appeal to a wide audience," Brown said. "My inspiration was to design a style that many different people could pull off in their own way."

Judges were impressed by Brown's wise selection of fabrics, colors and silhouette. Equally impressive was Brown's essay and process book that describes her design and demonstrated her knowledge of the design process from concept to completion.

Brown's fashion skills have already shined at The Art Institute of Indianapolis' Summer Studio 101 Workshop in 2007. She won Best in Fashion for her design of a nautical T-shirt. The $1,500 scholarship award will be added to her $3,000 Passion for Fashion Competition scholarship as Brown starts classes at The Art Institute of Indianapolis in July.

"My goal is to learn everything I can about the fashion industry at The Art Institute of Indianapolis and use that in a career as a designer or stylist to the celebrities," Brown said.

Passion for Fashion is an annual competition sponsored by The Art Institutes, which rewards fashion talent of high school seniors who demonstrate a strong interest in studying fashion. Local winners advance to the national competition in New York City, where the grand prize is a full tuition scholarship to study in a fashion program at one of The Art Institutes schools.

The Art Institute of Indianapolis is one of The Art Institutes, a system of more than 40 education institutions located throughout North America, providing an important source of design, media arts, fashion and culinary arts professionals.
