Taylor County found out early Friday that perennial 4A-power Boyle County, despite three losses in its first five games, still packs a potent punch.
The Rebels (3-3, 1-0) accumulated 535 total yards to just 139 for the Cardinals and posted a 53-0 home-field win.
The Cardinal defense held the Rebels in check early, giving up only a three-yard QB Casey Whittle touchdown through the first quarter and forcing two Boyle County punts.
During the second period, the Rebels began to freely move the ball as Kyle Kephart and Lloyd Hall added touchdowns and Will Harris pushed a 30-yard field goal through the uprights for a 25-0 half-time lead.
Taylor County used a Daulton Turpin 38-yard run and sustained a drive to get to first and goal from the 6-yard line midway in the second quarter. But, the Rebel defense dug in and denied the Cardinals’ best scoring threat. Turpin accounted for 91 (55 rushing and one catch for 36) of TCHS’ 139 total yards.
Boyle County (3-3 with losses to Highlands, John Hardin and Danville, teams totaling records of 15-1) added three more scores in the third quarter and added a fourth-quarter TD for the final margin.
The Cardinals (4-1, 0-1) return home this Friday (7:30) to face district opponent Marion County (1-4) at Clay Marcum field.
