Bennett buzzer-beater pushes Adair past Marion

-A A +A

Indians overcome a 24-6 deficit

By Bobby Brockman

Adair County senior Ty Bennett made sure there would not be a “tie” or an Indian loss when he connected on a right-wing, top-of-the-key three-pointer to send coach Mark Fudge’s club past Marion County 61-60 in Wednesday’s first-round game in the 20th District Tournament in Lebanon.
Adair County (17-12) came back from a 24-6 deficit and fought within 28-23 as Matt Fudge scored nine points during the run and Bennett added a pair of threes.
The Knights (19-10), who owned two previous victories over the Indians, gained a 30-23 advantage before four more Fudge free throws (making him 11-11 in the frame).
After two Bobby Jaglowicz free throws, Bennett nailed a trey just before the half-time horn.
Marion County went up 41-30 on two threes by Alex Smith and a bomb by Anthony Mattingly before Adair County scored nine straight on two Chance Melton baskets and a two and a three by Bennett.
The lead changed hands seven times in the game’s final four minutes, the last being Bennett’s game-winner.
Latrelle Irvin, who hit his last seven free throws, to lead the Knights with 18 points while Melton (25), Bennett (19) and Fudge (17) combined to score all of the Indian points. Melton, a freshman, joined Fudge in the 1,000-point club.
