Band teaches more than just music

Campbellsville High School Band Director Zach Shelton is excited and willing to work hard to reestablish the CHS Marching Band. And we're excited, too.

The CHS band was once a powerhouse, with many trips to semifinal and final competitions. Those accomplishments made our community proud, and we're looking forward to feeling that pride again.

Band members work hard, and they deserve a lot of credit. In addition to doing school work, they march after school in the rain and hot sun, memorize music and the steps to their marching show and represent their community when traveling.

But band isn't just about music.

Athletics aren't for every student. Through participation in band, the students gain much more than learning how to play an instrument. They mature, learn dedication, leadership and the true value of hard work and can be a part of something bigger than themselves. Marching band becomes a part of you. You live, sleep and breathe it.

It's also an excellent example of teamwork. For every band is only as good as its weakest member. One misstep by one member can affect the entire production. That's why learning the meaning of "teamwork" is so important.

And we can't forget the dedication of parents and other volunteers. No band program can successfully operate without the help of parent volunteers and their willingness to sacrifice weekends, sew costumes, provide first aid and supply meals.

We're glad that the CHS marching band isn't going to be a thing of the past and that more of our children will be able to learn these important life lessons.
