The Marion-Taylor County All Stars reached the “final four” of the 2013 Kentucky State Finals in the Junior Team Tennis 18-and-under Intermediate Division.
Led by Taylor County’s Mark Harris with a 6-0 record, the M-T All Stars rolled to a first-place finish in the six-team Group B pool before dropping a hard-fought battle 35-13 to a much deeper team from Georgetown.
“The performance of the M-T squad was the biggest surprise of the State Finals,” acknowledged league coordinator Bob Love. “Their adult captains, Roger Sharpe and Paula Cassidy, did an amazing job of distributing their playing strengths in an effective fashion.
“This is the first year for the M-T All-Star team, so next year they should be even better!”

Heartland Athletic Conference boys’ singles’ champion Alex Spalding of Marion County led the Central Kentucky Thunder to a repeat championships in the State Under-18 Intermediate Championship.
It was Spalding’s third state championship, having also won in 2010 and 2012. His record was 5-1 in boys’ singles and 2-0 in mixed doubles. The victory has also earned him a trip to the Southern Section JTT Finals in Auburn, Ala. on August 16-18. The Spalding-led Thunder squad will represent Kentucky against teams from eight other southern states.
