First win for Blue Raiders vs. Fighting Tigers in gridiron’s Hwy 55 battle

By Bobby Brockman

Campbellsville University led 17-3 in the first half, but home-standing Lindsey Wilson College tallied a touchdown before the half and added two more scores after a three-hour lightning, rain delay for a 24-17 triumph.
“It was a game of two halves in a way,” CU head coach Perry Thomas remarked after the six-hour game. “We had momentum with the kick-off return. Things were hitting right for us, but we just didn’t respond well (after the delay).”
It was the Blue Raiders’ first win (in four tries) in the Battle of Highway 55 24-17 early Sunday morning.
CU’s Jarrod Harrington returned the game’s opening kick-off 98 yards to pay dirt. After LWC kicked a field goal, the Fighting Tigers answered with a field goal and a Bryan Parnell to Trevon Chatman pass play for six to lead 17-3.
The Blue Raiders tallied before the half to trail 17-10. That score stood until just over eight minutes remained in the third quarter and officials halted play for what turned out to be a three-hour delay (roughly 10:30 p.m., ET, to 1:30 a.m.) for lightning and heavy rain.
LWC scored two touchdowns after the delay for the 24-17 victory.
Campbellsville returns to action on Saturday night (7:00) at NCAA FCS opponent Murray State.
