In pressed uniforms, the officers stand at attention. They are there to remember one of their own.

If the statistics are any indication, the murder rate has been on the rise in Taylor County for the past few years.
According to the Taylor Circuit Clerk’s office, 12 people have been charged with either attempted murder or murder in Taylor County during the past 10 years.
Eight of 12 were charged in the past five years. Four were charged in 2005 alone.

The recent accidental shooting and killing of a Florida pastor’s daughter at church has once again ignited the debate about whether or not guns belong in churches. As a former law enforcement officer, my unequivocal answer is “yes, they do”. When rare incidents such as this accidental shooting occur, it is important that we as a society keep things in perspective. In today’s world, it is prudent for churches to take effective steps to protect their congregations from potential violence. Incidents like this should not be used as an excuse to strip us of our rights to do so.
My son John and I were discussing our long history of working with Dennis Benningfield over the past years, primarily since l988 when he became a detective with the Kentucky State Police. At the time I was the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Green, Taylor, Marion and Washington counties, and John soon became an assistant.

While the holiday season is a time of giving, for some it can be a time for taking.
“It’s a time of benevolence and goodwill,” said Campbellsville Police Chief Tim Hazlette. “There are people just looking for things for free and they try to play on people’s emotions.”
“Most of it is just common sense,” said Taylor County Sheriff Allen Newton. “Don’t make it easy for [thieves].”
Newton said his office is already investigating one home break-in in which someone stole Christmas presents.
