Wow! Just when I thought Campbellsville was finally making strides for improvement and actually growing,
I read the article “Cruising causes concerns for residents.”
Really?
I grew up with cruising. Every Friday and Saturday night we all looked forward to going to town and seeing our friends and showing off our cars. There was no trouble. A policeman was usually patrolling the area.
The only time there was any trouble was away from town, not in town.

There is a lot going on in Taylor County. We’ve started county road blacktopping projects and we are working on some bridges.
I want to remind the community to be aware of their surroundings when we are doing these projects, especially for possible detours.
We will notify when we will be doing any construction work for closures by newspaper and on local radio stations, so please be patient and watch for the construction in the areas.

After discussing the issue at three meetings, magistrates still haven’t decided whether the county should buy a new incinerator or repair the current one at the Taylor County Animal Shelter.
Instead, magistrates have agreed to contract with a local company to incinerate the Taylor County Animal Shelter’s dead animals until a decision can be made. At Tuesday night’s regular Taylor County Fiscal Court meeting, representatives from two companies spoke to magistrates about incinerators.

A man is still on the run after he robbed a local restaurant early Sunday morning.
Arby’s Restaurant in Lake View Shopping Center was robbed at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, after a man confronted two female employees as they were walking out of the restaurant.
Campbellsville Police Chief Tim Hazlette said the women had counted the night’s receipts and placed that money inside a bag to take to a night deposit.
“They were confronted outside by a male person,” Hazlette said. “He physically assaulted them.”

It will be a bit more difficult for drug producers to get their hands on large amounts of a product needed to make methamphetamine, thanks to a law that goes into effect today.
Also in measures that become law today, passengers in large vans are no longer exempt from wearing a seat belt and thieves won't be able to sell stolen copper and other materials for quick cash at recycling centers.
Another bill allows Kentuckians to carry concealed weapons without a license on their property or place of business.

They met their goal. Not only did more people participate, they also raised more money to help fight cancer.
Taylor County’s annual Relay for Life events were Friday and Saturday at Taylor County High School’s track.
Jamaal Stiles, chair of this year’s events, said the goal was to raise $40,000. As of last weekend, about $37,000 had been collected with more donations expected.
Last year, he said, about $32,500 was raised.
“We’re so happy,” Stiles said.

When students head back to school in August, they could have to pay a bit more for their breakfast and lunch.
At Taylor County schools, those who qualify for reduced lunches won’t have to pay for them at all.
At last week’s regular Taylor County Board of Education meeting, Food Service Director Gertie Graves told members she has tried to keep lunch prices affordable, and remembers only one increase in lunch prices during her time at the District.

Coming into office, I had no plans to create any new debt for the city.
Purchasing land for a new park was definitely not my intention. At first, I did not even want to discuss the issue. I simply did not feel the purchase would be a wise decision.
However, an opportunity arose that I felt could better our community for many years to come, and as new information emerged, my interest in the purchase grew.

The final figures are in and the city of Campbellsville is expected to operate with nearly $16 million next fiscal year.
The Campbellsville City Council had final reading of the 2012-2013 budget during a five-minute special meeting Monday. The vote was unanimous and there was no discussion. Council members Patti Phillips, Vangie Ford and Terry Keltner did not attend the meeting.
The budget - which is about $1 million more than the budget for the current fiscal year - includes a 1-percent raise for City employees, which costs about $45,000.
