The future of Taylor County’s economic development was the highlight of Monday night’s Campbellsville City Council meeting.
Ron McMahan, executive director of the Campbellsville/Taylor County Economic Development Authority, announced that Gov. Steve Beshear will visit Campbellsville on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 4 p.m.
The location of Beshear’s visit was moved from Heartland Commerce & Technology Park to the Taylor County Extension conference room because construction and excavation can’t begin until building plans are approved.

Considering revenue generated from fees and licenses and a nonexistent rise in alcohol-related crime since, Campbellsville going moist has had little impact.
It’s been a little more than four years since the first alcoholic drink was poured at a Campbellsville restaurant after voters said they want the city to be moist.
Since then, about $80,000 has been generated and there haven’t been any more DUI arrests than normal.

Here’s hoping Kentucky shared in the national decline in teen smoking reported recently by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
USA Today attributes an “historic drop in smoking,” not just among teens but across all age groups, to a 62-cent increase in the federal cigarette tax in 2009.
Raising the federal tax to $1.01 a pack has brought in about $30 billion in new revenue to the U.S. treasury.
Meanwhile, some 3 million fewer Americans smoked in 2011 than in 2009, even though the population has increased.

The city of Campbellsville will save approximately $100,000 it had planned to spend on health insurance increases for employees in the coming year.
At Tuesday night’s city council meeting, the city’s insurance broker, Kelly Hardy, presented proposals for employee insurance rates to the council from two companies, Humana and United Health Care.
The city had budgeted for an increase of 15 percent in insurance premiums for the coming year with Humana, its current provider.

With the first fiscal year since local EMS services were merged just completed, city and county officials say they have spent less to operate emergency services operations than they anticipated.
And they say the merger of Campbellsville/Taylor County Rescue and Campbellsville Fire Department was what made that happen.

Residents likely won’t see an increase in their city property tax bills this year.
During a special meeting on Monday night, Campbellsville City Council members had first reading of an ordinance that keeps the city’s real and personal property rates the same as last year at 19.2 and 17.9 cents per $100 assessed value, respectively.
Though last year’s rates were 19.1 and 18.1 cents, the differences in property value will produce about the same revenue as last year, at $5,000 more revenue for the new property located in the city limits.

Wow! Just when I thought Campbellsville was finally making strides for improvement and actually growing,
I read the article “Cruising causes concerns for residents.”
Really?
I grew up with cruising. Every Friday and Saturday night we all looked forward to going to town and seeing our friends and showing off our cars. There was no trouble. A policeman was usually patrolling the area.
The only time there was any trouble was away from town, not in town.

There is a lot going on in Taylor County. We’ve started county road blacktopping projects and we are working on some bridges.
I want to remind the community to be aware of their surroundings when we are doing these projects, especially for possible detours.
We will notify when we will be doing any construction work for closures by newspaper and on local radio stations, so please be patient and watch for the construction in the areas.

After discussing the issue at three meetings, magistrates still haven’t decided whether the county should buy a new incinerator or repair the current one at the Taylor County Animal Shelter.
Instead, magistrates have agreed to contract with a local company to incinerate the Taylor County Animal Shelter’s dead animals until a decision can be made. At Tuesday night’s regular Taylor County Fiscal Court meeting, representatives from two companies spoke to magistrates about incinerators.
