Legislators busy with interim session
As you may know, the interim is in full swing with committees continuing to meet to study new issues and to review the progress of newly enacted laws.
These committees are made up of both Senate and House members and are known as Interim Joint Committees. I chair the Veterans, Military Affairs and Public Protection Committee and the Budget Review Subcommittee on Transportation.
I serve on nine other committees and task forces that tackle issues ranging from energy to education to health and welfare to economic development and tourism, among others.

Senator appreciates participation at community legislative meeting
I was honored to join Taylor County Judge/Executive Eddie Rogers, Rep. John “Bam” Carney, R-Campbellsville, many other elected officials and members of the community for the standing room only Legislative Coffee event on Jan. 17 in Taylor County.
As elected officials, hearing the concerns of our constituents is vital to us as we weigh a wide range of important issues, both locally and at the state level.

Support bill to protect victims, children of rape
For many victims of sexual assault, the physical attack is often just the beginning.
But during this General Assembly, our lawmakers have an opportunity to make the ordeal a little less complicated for those who become pregnant by their rapists.
Kentucky is one of 34 states where, because of a loophole in current law, women who become pregnant as a result of rape could face further harassment from their attackers when they sue for parental visitation rights to the child.
Rep. Dennis Keene, D-Wilder, has filed a bill to close this loophole.

Pill mill law could see changes
They say it has likely helped the problem, but some changes are in the works to alleviate some unintended effects.
State legislators might soon discuss changes to the pill mill legislation they approved last year, and is now law.
The pill mill bill, passed during last year’s special session, requires doctors and pharmacists to use the Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting system to monitor the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances.

Gun control not the answer to senseless violence
During his news conference in the wake of the killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, President Obama pushed hard for Congress to quickly enact new and more restrictive gun control measures.
He also signed 23 executive orders positioned as actions to keep our nation’s children safe.
